About ALBEM

In these changing times of stronger union stances and public denunciation of some of our school leaders, your voice is more vital than ever to the interests of  managers and non-represented employees, as well as to our schools and students. That’s why it is important to join ALBEM, the Association of Long Beach Educational Managers and Confidential Employees.

Your dues give you a say in school district decisions that affect your life and your career. Each month, ALBEM leaders meet with our Superintendent to convey concerns, ideas, and suggestions of ALBEM members. General membership meetings several times a year give you a chance to voice your opinions and vote on issues and directions of our association. Hundreds of employees belong to ALBEM, a well-established face-to-face communications link between its members and the district’s leading decision makers.

Through your ALBEM membership, you also get the satisfaction of making a difference. Each year, ALBEM membership dues pay for thousands of dollars in scholarships for deserving kids in our schools. And you’ll be connecting with colleagues and friends. In addition to the general meetings, ALBEM hosts two breakfasts annually: the Partnership Breakfast and the Scholarship Breakfast, where we also recognize our supervising and confidential secretaries.

Our new  ALBEM website will keep you informed about important issues and events that affect you. In the uncertain times ahead, ALBEM could be your best ally.

Make your voice count.

Long Beach, area schools show gains in STAR tests

Students in the Long Beach Unified School District and other area school districts showed steady gains this year in math, English and other subjects, according to state standardized test results released Friday.

The annual Standardized Testing and Reporting program, known as STAR, is a set of state tests that measure student performance in English, math, science and history. The results are used to determine whether schools can meet academic performance standards set by the state accountability system and the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

Each student is grouped into one of five levels based on performance: advanced, proficient, basic, below basic and far below basic. The state's goal is to have every student perform at the proficient or advanced level.(more)

More Long Beach area students passing high school exam

A growing number of 10th-graders in the Long Beach Unified School District and other area districts are passing the state-mandated high school exit exam, according to results released Wednesday.

In Long Beach, some high schools showed significant gains, while others saw slight improvements.

Cabrillo High, a traditionally underperforming school on the city's Westside, saw one of the biggest gains, with 75 percent of sophomores passing the English portion of the test this year, up from 69 percent in 2011. (more)
